Question:

I want to install the Monroe shock kit on the Travel Trailer. It has two axles, do I need to put shocks (kits) on both axles or just the rear or front?

Answer:

The job of the shock absorber is to dampen the spring’s reaction to bumps and road imperfections, when the spring compresses and expands, the shock is working against it to keep the vehicle from bouncing around and keep the tires in contact with the road, so how many shocks you need really depends. You could do either one and see if it rides the way you like, then add another set later if you need to. We recommend using shocks on every axle, to be sure that your trailer will be under control.

You can see the Monroe trailer retrofit kits for installing shocks on a trailer without them here: http://www.shockwarehouse.com/site/mon_retrokit.cfm

You can read more about shocks here: http://www.shockwarehouse.com/site/shock_absorber_myths.cfm

Answer:

Your best bet is going to be a Monroe shock specifically designed for a trailer, you can see those here:
I think that Monroe trailer shock 555001 will be your best bet, it has a compressed length of 7.9 inches and an extended length of 11.9 inches.

Our van is for highway driving and we tow a 18′ pontoon boat. Because conversions add weight I think our shocks should be heavy duty. Is that correct

Answer:

You’re absolutely right, with the extra weight of your conversion van and the boat you tow, Heavy Duty shocks will be needed to keep you safe and in control, expecially at highway speeds and on rough roads. I think your best bet will be the Bilstein Heavy Duty or KYB Monomax shocks. Both are very well built heavy duty high pressure monotubes that will take whatever you throw at them. You can see those here:

Make: GMC
Model: K2500 HD Sierra
Chassis Designation: 4WD Crew Cab

What is your driving style: Hard Performance Driver
Vehicle Setup: 4 Wheel Drive
Suspension Type: Regular Shocks or Struts

Question:

My truck is a K2500 HD 4 door crew cab. I am looking for a good heavy duty shock I was told by a dealer that the 5100 series would be for front and because I tow a trailer (30ft traveler trailer and a utility trailer for work) that the 6100 series would be for the back. Is this what you would recommend. They say that the truck is stock suspension with a leveler in the front, I would like to raise it up some anywhere from 2″to 4″ and would like your suggestions concerning that as well.

Answer:

The Bilstein 5100 series is the best choice for your truck front and back because it is designed specifically for your truck, rather than being built for generic off-road racing trucks like the 6100 series. The 5100s are a really good choice for towing large trailers and will give you more control and better stability over the truck and trailer than your stock shocks do. For your truck as it sits now, you will want to use either part # F4-BE5-E710-H0 for the front, which is designed for up to 4 inches of leveling if you’ve used the torsion bars to lift the truck, or part # F4-BE5-D146-H0, which is designed for up to 2.5 inches of suspension lift if you have a different sort of leveling kit.

Part # F4-BE5-D147-H0 is the best shock to use for the rear with no lift, but if you plan on lifting the rear of the truck, we have a shock designed for 2 or 4 inches. You can see all of those shocks here:
Since you are towing, your best bet would be to use a monotube shock design.
(Edelbrock, Bilstein, or KYB Gasajust)
